Grants in Action!

Robots Have Entered the Classroom… and It’s a Game-Changer!

Beep boop beep! The future just leveled up in two Humble ISD classrooms—powered by gears, code, and a whole lot of student imagination. Thanks to a generous $25,000 grant from Comcast, two innovative teachers are bringing robotics and engineering to life in ways that are transforming how students learn—and how they see the world.

At Kingwood Middle School, students in Matthew Zamarron’s class will be diving headfirst into the world of STEM using VEX IQ robotics kits. Instead of just reading about engineering, they’re building, coding, and collaborating in real time. The classroom buzzes with energy as students test their robots, tweak their designs, and solve problems on the fly. For many, it’s their first experience applying math and science in a hands-on, team-based environment. But most importantly—it’s fun.

Just down the road at Kingwood High School, Colin Zabel is giving students the chance to take their ideas from concept to competition. Using XRP (Experiential Robotics Platform) kits, a CNC router, and real-world design tools, students aren’t just imagining new ideas—they’re manufacturing them. They're designing and programming their own components, preparing for the rigors of FIRST Robotics competition, and learning what it takes to succeed in industries like aerospace technology and advanced manufacturing.

Together, these projects are doing more than just teaching robotics—they're bridging STEM learning gaps, building confidence, and giving students the tools they need to explore future careers. From middle schoolers learning the basics of coding to high schoolers preparing for national competitions, these classrooms have become launchpads for innovation and creativity.

Zamarron and Zabel both believe that hands-on learning is key to unlocking student potential. “They’re not just building robots,” Zabel said. “They’re building skills that last a lifetime.” And Zamarron agrees: “It’s exciting to see students realize they’re capable of designing and building something from scratch.

Educators like Mr. Zabel and Mr. Zamarron aren’t just teaching lessons—they are opening doors to futures their students never imagined possible,” said Jerri Monbaron, Executive Director of the Humble ISD Education Foundation. “With the support of partners like Comcast,  these students are learning that their ideas matter—and that the future really is theirs to build.

Through Xfinity and Comcast Business services, we’re committed not only to bringing reliable high-speed internet and fostering a more connected community, but also to investing in the future of Texas children. This support means equipping them with the tools they need to thrive in a digital world. Our investment in the Humble ISD Foundation is part of our commitment to ensuring all students have access to cutting-edge technology that supports learning, creativity, and opportunity,” said Rasheedah Carr, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Comcast Texas.
